I'm a trombonist, about 7 years playing experience, and can read music pretty well. I havnt gone very far with AMEB, but i am currently studying a Jazz music course in Greensborough. Where are you guys based??
I’m interested in finding out about the big band you are putting together. I play Alto, Tenor and Bari sax and play an assortment of hand percussion as well. It may well be the opportunity I need to get back into reading charts and could be a heap of fun as well, as I played with a number of successful big bands around 15 years ago.
Firstly, a few questions:
1 Where do you want to take this (ie: a rehearsing band, unpaid or low-paid community gigs, professional gigs, whatever…)?
2 Do all your sax players need to double another instrument? (does an EWI count?).
3 You mention 1000 charts, what style of music is involved here and who’s arrangements are they?
4 Where, when and how often are you going to rehearse? Also, is there any particular age range for members?

As I mentioned, at the moment I was mainly interested in seeing if I had enough interest in starting a band this size. now that is seems enough people might me interested, I'll start looking for an appropriate venue to start regular rehearsals.
the arrangments are from a well known local musician who has retired, I have access to his library and can't stand to see it just sitting there.
Long term plans ideally are to perform professionally, but we need to be sure we have a product worth showing first.
as far as age limits are concerned, I'm more interested in your playing that how old you are or how you look, call me old fashioned
Hope that answers at least some of your questions, thanks again for your interest I'll keep you posted here as to first rehearsals.
