You may have heard of the Jazz jam sessions - they are on every week, and seem to be getting bigger than ever. Jazz Musicians of any stripe are warmly invited to put down your pina coladas, get dressed and go home immediately. You may then steal your best mates's guitar, trumpet, saxophone, banjo or bagpipes, and git on down to The Post Hotel on the corner of Inkerman St and St Kilda Road, at 4.00pm - 7.30pm or later on any Sunday for a little light participation in what we laughing call a jazz ensemble.
Musicians (there are 30 - 40 at every session) can be rank amateurs, rank professionals or somewhere in between. The good musos are the ones who can make the others sound good too.
Piano players, please don't bring a piano -'cos they are way heavy and we have one already. Singers bring a microphone if you have delusions of grandeur, or just rock up as we have a full and dodgy PA system waiting for ya. Drummers and Bass players - turn up as proof that despite your instrument of choice you can actually read - these ads rarely appeal to those who can't.
And the rest of you, just wander in, look confused, put your name on the list, and we will get you a spot as quickly as possible. Or turn up just to listen, gossip and network with other musos.
It should be a lot of fun... last year certainly was.
